It is a rare secondary mineral of hydrated magnesium and chromium carbonate, famous for its unusual color which varies between pale pink, lilac and dark purple. It forms through the alteration of ultramafic rocks (rich in magnesium), specifically from the alteration of chromite in serpentinites.
